3 Causes of Diarrhea
Diarrhea might have you running for the bathroom, losing track of how many times you've been to the bathroom, and having you saying a prayer for a day of constipation. Let me tell you, the grass is always greener.
Either way, it's interfering with your life and leaving you uncomfortable. And I'm guessing you're confused why it's happening and what to do about it.
Here's 3 top causes of diarrhea to look out for:
[01] Stress. Stress can trigger acute diarrhea and sometimes urgency. I pointed out to one of my clients that her episodes (4-6 trips to the bathroom) would happen after crazy mornings of getting the kids out of the door. We added some calm to her morning routine and she started waking up 15 minutes earlier to have some kid-free relaxation before the day started and she saw huge improvements in her urgency. After working on stress plus removing a gut infection (more info below), she said she wasn’t scared to leave the house anymore.
[02] Poor fat digestion. Undigested fats can show up in your stool consistency and have you feeling tried after eating. This can look like:
pale colored stools
floating stools
oily stools
malodorous stools or gas
knowing high fat meals upset your stomach (when someone says fast food or greasy pizza “destroys” their stomach, that's a red flag)
Bloating
Not having a gallbladder
Again, pay attention to when you have loose stools and look at what you ate the meal or day before and if it was higher in fat. Then we add in fat digestion support with food and sometimes targeted supplements such as Ox Bile or digestion GB.
[03] Gut infections. When bad gut bugs such as bacteria or candida overgrowth they can lead to loose stools (on top of bloating, gas, brain fog, mood issues, fatigue, and more). A poop test is a great way to identify gut imbalances. If we know candida is a problem we can make specific diet changes and use targeted supplements to kill yeast and balance your gut bacteria. Or if we find you have a parasite, that requires a specific protocol.
A random supplement can’t fix runaway stress, poor fat digestion, or gut infections. In the case of poor fat digestion, avoiding high fat foods can help with symptom management, but doesn’t fix underlying causes such as liver stress and sluggish gallbladder.
A root cause approach that uncovers the WHY behind your symptoms is the difference between continuing the cycles of goggling and guessing or finally breaking free of gut symptoms controlling your life.
